We are sorry to share this bad news of a new poisoning in Argentina !!
We feel your pain brothers of the Andean Condor Conservation Program!
MASS DEATH OF CONDORS IN SANTA CRUZ. Perito Moreno. At least another 6 (six) condors were found dead in the town of Perito Moreno, Santa Cruz. Members of the Flora and Fauna Foundation gave notice of the finding to the Provincial Agrarian Council (CAP) and Fundación Bioandina Argentina (FBA). A work team was immediately organized, consisting of CAP authorities (Perito Moreno and Calafate delegations), Flora and Fauna Foundation, FBA, CONICET and, with the support of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of the Nation (SAyDS), They went to the place to investigate what happened.
Once at the site, the work team evaluated the distribution and condition of each of the bodies. The animals were distributed in a small area, next to a dead sheep and the remains of a fox, which boasted another case of poisoning. All the bodies were removed from the site to clean up the area and avoid future poisonings. Necropsies were completed at the facilities of CAP Perito Moreno and, with the support of Aerolineas Argentinas, Ecoparque de Buenos Aires and Bioparque Temaikèn, samples were derived for toxicological studies to Bs As, which resulted in: Carbofuran poisoning.
Alarm the repetition of cases registered in the province. Less than a year ago, in the same town, 10 (ten) condors killed by Carbofuran were reported. In January of this year, another condor and several raptors died in Río Turbio for the same reason and, less than a month ago, the Municipality declared “environmental and sanitary emergency” for the death of more than 60 (sixty) dogs poisoned in the city.
The authorities are investigating who could have committed these facts. Unfortunately, some villagers use poison to try to control large carnivores (such as pumas, foxes or dogs). This not only causes the death of scavengers, responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the environment, but also pollutes the soil, water and endangers all forms of life, including human health.
